GOING LOCAL
The decision to confine Facebook groups to specific territories is another key element.
Territoriality facilitated the transition from the virtual to the real, making it easier for
group members to meet. The territorial approach has also helped overcome barriers of
social class, interests, age, political and religious affiliations, and origin, promoting a
sense of shared belonging.
The absence of economic, political, or legal interests has proven to be the distinctive
innovative aspect of Social Street, clearly differentiating it from other associative
initiatives or committees. This choice has generated strong general interest, as
evidenced by the creation of over 450 groups in Italy and abroad following the Social
Street model. Success has also attracted the attention of the academic world, with
numerous studies and research spanning disciplines such as psychology, anthropology,
sociology, economics, and urban planning.
In conclusion, Social Street is more than a virtual platform. It is a movement that has
brought social interaction from the virtual to the real, based on principles of freeness,
inclusion, and flexibility, earning the support and recognition of communities and
scholars worldwide.
